Maria Winfield May 11 through June 22
Opening reception May 18 from 7 to 9 pm with discussion starting at 8pm
Maria Inez Winfield began creating art as a five-year-old. This body of work represents her journey as a doctoral student at the University of Georgia.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Arizona University, Master of Liberal Arts from the Bread Loaf School of English, and will receive her Doctor of Philosophy in Language and Literacy Education on May 12, 2007. She is an education consultant, teacher, writer, and artist. She describes herself in the following poem:

I am from white sands
From Alamogordo
And deep New Mexican roots
Roswell, Las Cruces, Vado, Sante Fe
Roots stretching from west
To east

I am from green glassmakers
From Jamestown
And African artisans
Surry County, Suffolk, Norfolk, Newport News
Ancestry reaching from continent
To continent

I am from Nick and Mandy Gates
Seminole and Choctaw, trailing
Tears west of the Mississippi
From Mr. Pad, Mama Sarah, Mama Lula
Crossing the Atlantic on broken promises

I am from chickens, pigs
Windmills, dusty farm land
And from dark fertile soil
And thick musty Virginian air

I am from stacked enchiladas
Mexican corn, frosted flakes
And home made yeast rolls
Ham hocks, collard greens

I am from "Happy Sunday!"
"Blessed are the meek..."
And "Be angry but do not sin,
Do not let the sun go down
upon your anger."

I am from red leather photo albums
Silver metal slide containers
Faces reaching from heaven
The mighty cloud of witnesses

AVOIDING CAPTURE.
