Essential Fatty Acids

Americans are practically trained to turn tail and run at the mere mention of the word "fat" but actually there are good fats as well as bad fats. These good fats are called essential fatty acids or EFAs and without them we could not survive. EFAs are mandatory for our bodies to properly function yet are not produced by the body; therefore, must be supplied through diet or supplementation. Food sources for EFAs are fresh deepwater fish, flaxseed, legumes and sesame seeds just to name a few. Most Americans, however, do not receive all they need from their diets and should supplement.

EFAs are essential for repair, oxygen transfer and energy production on the cellular level as well as producing prostagladins - chemical messengers - which regulate each cell's nutrient intake and division. EFAs improve hair and skin, reduce blood pressure and aid in the prevention of arthritis. Additionally, essential fatty acids assist in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. EFAs can be helpful in fighting candida, cardiovascular disease, eczema and psoriasis.

The EFAs found in fish oils have proven to be effective in combating the symptoms of depression, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and multiple sclerosis. Essential Fatty Acids aid in weight loss by helping to regulate sodium balance, water retention and fat metabolism. Found in high concentrations in the brain, EFAs assist in the transmission of nerve impulses and are essential for proper development and function of the brain. A deficiency of EFAs can lead to impaired ability to learn and recall information.

Proper amounts of EFAs are particularly important for women in all stages of life. For hormonal balance essential fatty acids such as those found in Evening Primrose oil help prevent mood swings, PMS, dry, acne-prone skin, breast tenderness as well as pre-, peri- and post menopausal symptoms. Deficiencies in Omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy have been linked to behavioral problems, visual dysfunction and neurological disorders in children.
